As the days on which
the Jews had rest
from their enemies,
as the month which
was turned from
sorrow to joy for
them, and from
mourning to a holiday;
that they should make
them days of feasting
and joy, of sending
presents to one
another and gifts to
the poor.
Esther 9:22

Purim is a day of
giving pleasure.  For
this reason we
perform
tzedakah
(giving to those in
need; justice)
by
donating food to the
poor.

For this reason we
ask every guest to
bring at least
two can goods.
Even though the name
of God does not appear
in the book of Esther
His presence is
overwhelming.

Esther is a story of
God's compassion and
everlasting love for His
people.

Hamantaschen

Hamantaschen
means Haman's
pockets, but really,
the triangle-shaped
cookies look like the
hat Haman
supposedly wore.
The cookies are
sweet tasting, filled
with either a poppy
seed or fruit mixture
(usually prune).

Honey Dough

4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking
soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
4 eggs
1 cup honey
1/4 pound butter,
melted

Preheat the oven to
350.  Sift the dry
ingredients together
into a large bowl.
Add the eggs, honey,
and butter, and mix.
Roll out on a lightly
floured board.  This
is a very sticky
dough; you might
need to add a little
flour to get the
dough flat.  With a
glass of a diameter
of three or four
inches, cut circles in
the dough, rolling it
out again and again
until it is all in
circles.  Put a little
filling in the center of
each circle, and fold
the edges to make
three corners.  Bake
for 30 minutes.  Let
the hamantaschen
cool, and give them
away to your friends
and family.  Makes
about 48 cookies.

Prune Filling

1 pound cooked
prunes
1 teaspoon grated
orange rind
1/2 cup nuts
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
extract

In a large bowl, chop
the prunes, then add
the other
ingredients, and mix
well.

About these fillings:
any fruit preserves
can be used.  And
the poppy seed filling
comes already
made, in a can.

The Story of Esther
The story of deliverance

The Jews had light and gladness, joy and honor
Esther 8:16

As the days on which the Jews had rest from their
enemies, as the month which was turned from
sorrow to joy for them, and from mourning to a
holiday; that they should make them days of
feasting and joy, of sending presents to one another
and gifts to the poor.
Esther 9:22

Pur in the Persian language simply means "lot."
The Hebrew "im" ending makes the word plural
"lots"

Lots is somewhat like drawing straws.

It was this method that was chosen in the book of
Esther to determine the date upon which vengeance
would fall upon the Jewish people.

Once again in the story of Esther we see that the
enemy had sought to destroy the Jews as a race.

Jehovah God had the last word!

Once again God's people were delivered from the enemy!

So, the Feast of Purim is known as the Feast of
Deliverance.

It is a time of rejoicing and gladness.

This feast is known as the merriest holiday on the
Jewish calendar.

The primary focus during this ceremony of Purim is the
reading
of the megillah.

The book of Esther

During Purim the divine command to blot out the
name Haman is taken literally.

When Haman's name is read from the scroll of Esther
the hearers make a terrible noise.  They bang pots and
pans, blow a shofar, use a grogger, beat a drum etc...

Some write Haman's name on the bottom of their shoes
and they stomp their feet.

The Jews had light and gladness, joy and honor.

Jewish Year 5773

On Purim, all Jews are required to fulfill the four Purim mitzvot:

•Two readings of the Megillah (Scroll of Esther) (Mikrah Megillah)
•Festive meal (Seudah Purim)
•Gifts of food to friends (Mishloach Manot)
•Charity to the poor (Matanot l'Evyonim)

The first reading of the Megillah must occur sometime between
sunset the night before Purim and sunrise on Purim; it usually
takes place just after sunset. The second reading must occur
between sunrise and sunset on Purim. It is ideal to hear the
Megillah in the synagogue with many people, but the most
important thing is that the reading is heard clearly. When
Haman's name is read, it is customary for the congregation to
yell and make noise so that it cannot be heard. This symbolically
blots out the memory of his name from the earth.
Groggers
The Purim Noisemakers

Groggers are the noisemakers used during the reading of the
Meglliah. Every time the name of Haman is mentioned, everyone
boos, hisses, stamps their feet and twirls their groggers. Though
groggers are usually shown as the rectangular shape pictured below,
any type of noisemaker can be used.
